Why START now?

Against this backdrop of a crazed nuclear regime, the Obama administration insists on the ratification of the New START Treaty during the current lame-duck session of Congress, a treaty that would limit our ability to deal with North Korea militarily.

The treaty limits each side to 700 deployed intercontinental ballistic missiles, submarine-launched ballistic missiles and heavy bombers. The Russians are already beneath the treaty limit of 700 launchers, and their economic condition does not facilitate a massive new buildup. We're not limiting their weapons, only ours.

Obama never really understood strategy or strategic weapons and his conduct on START and the North Koreans and Iranians suggest he has not grown in office. He thinks that since he is never going to use ours, that he is not hurting us by reducing them. He fails to see that the need for deterrence did not end with the cold war.
